Been using koi master/Replenish for most of the summer now and found it to be very helpful as an additive for the pH level and to a certain extent water quality. That is until this weekend with the sun shining on the pond there is a slight tinge to the water so instead of the usual additive I tried the old favourite Magic Powder & Super Clean C.

I have been very surprised at the amount of D.O.C that it has pulled up to the surface, it leaves a film floating unlike the koi masters/Replenish ...

I did my water top up today which is normal for a weekend. What I dont have is a way of measuring the amount to ensure it is a 10% change. Also I need to fit a auto top up to the system as yet again I went indoors and forgot it was topping up. 2 hrs later I realised so I think it has had a good refresh this week.

So how do others do a water change and know it is 10% of your volume ?

The following is from Chris Masters on why he developed Koi Masters Advantage

I have always used clay and still use Refresh on a weekly basis. The Japanese breeders use it and Mark Crampton who "is" a friend of mine used it.It is some 20 odd years ago that I first encountered it.

I breed my KOI and with many fry,my parent koi and own collection I run heavily stocked.

3 years ago I noticed that my water "quality" did not appear to be what it had been,so for ...

Cant decide whether to continue with the replenish or throw some blanketweed treatment in, anyone have success with blitzing the pond daily with replenish/advantage ?

I always considered myself an experienced fish keeper and today I have come down to earth with a bang.

My filtration system has been running successfully for two years - parameters were spot on and with only minute fluctuations - so much so that I have been routinely testing the water parameters assuming that everything would be ok - very little food going in periodic top ups after cleaning the nexus. Decided today (thank god) to do a spring clean of my ponds and get a base reading on the parameters ...

DO is dissolved oxygen and yes, you can measure it!

Nigel Caddock NI

So why do you suppose that every year so many Koi keepers still get into trouble due to basic oxygen depletion? As one of the most basic and simple elements its often taken for granted. Be honest when was the last time you measured the O2 levels in your system?

Sure you check ammonia, nitrite, pH but how often oxygen? Up to a few years ago there was a reasonable excuse simply ...

kH (carbonate hardness or total alkalinity)

As you may know, there are many things that can cause your pH to fluctuate, and most of them will cause the pH to drop. For this reason, it is vital to constantly monitor the pond’s pH. Now you might be wondering what you can do about all of this if you do see diurnal fluctuations in your pH of more than .3 (three tenths).

That brings us to kH, also known as alkalinity, total alkalinity, and/or temporary hardness. Call it what you want, ...

ORP = Oxidation Reduction Potential - basically, and very basically, it is a measure of pollution in a body of water.

within a koi pond oxidation reactions occur as a result of the breakdown of water products. So the higher the ORP level the less polluted the water. Low ORP levels can be attributed to decaying organic matter, low dissolved oxygen, high nitrates or high DOC

ORP meters use mV as the measuring scale and have a minus and plus range

Readings below 150mV - big improvements are required ...
