For me currently at 25c if I wanted to use pp I would have to drop the temp considerably (18c) to use it or risk killing the fish. To my mind this then poses a risk as you are now making the environment unstable creating more problems

As a few of you know I have embarked on visiting other people and sort out their pond problems.

Well today I visited a pond that on first impressions was a reasonable pond water clear koi swimming around. After chatting with the owner for a short while I set about testing the water parameters, they checked out ok. So look at the filters first problem no air at all going in, easily solved.

The pond had a few baskets of plants around the edges on a shelf so I moved a basket to see how ...

Last night I noticed a Koi looked poorly, it was bloated and seemed to be swimming in a strange way, like it was an effort to stay upright.

It was too late to do anything so i planned on getting it out this morning to have a closer look and possibly do a scrape etc BUT alas, the poor thing was dead at the bottom of the deep end of the pond.

It showed no signs of flashing, none of them have. Water params are spot on, temp getting upto 14 to 15 with plenty of air going in. I thought ...

With the pond temperatures starting to rise in the unheated ponds, is everyone keeping an eye on their koi to watch for signs of parasites, clamped fins, flicking, sulking in a corner, not eating the list goes on.
The parasites seem to wake up quicker than the filter bacteria. Been to several ponds this week all with parasite problems. Keep your eyes open and treat sooner rather than later when the damage is done and ulcers start appearing.

Hi

This is how I do a scrape. Firstly set up your scope, and net the Koi.Leave the koi in the net in the pond and using a plastic plant label or something similar and gently run the scraper along the body of the koi from just behind the gills to the tail then transfer the mucus to the slide before placing the cover slip on.Drip some pond water on the slide as this will help to keep it moist and make finding the parasites easier.Start at a magnification of 100 then work up to 400 you will see ...
