Hi everyone, hope you're all keeping well.

Had a trip to Yorkshire today, so thought I'd make the most of it. Popped by Quality Koi Co. in Brighouse. Not sure if anyone has been before? But they are based in an old community hall over 3 levels.

Very helpful and informative, with a wealth of experience.

Also, would be keen on knowing whether anyone has used their filtration systems or had any experience with them?

Yes know the place well, never purchased any koi from them but had plenty of parts for ponds.

What is their own filtration system, I hope it is not the useless canterbury spa system, as I have had bad dealings with this type of system.

Not sure on the canterbury spa - but they do have great water quality with high stock levels.

They are essentially trickle filters. They use a medium called Perlag, which is an inert, porous lava rock with moisture retention qualities. There are X amount of spray bars over a chamber of perlag, with a layer of filter wool draped over the spray bars/perlag. The water goes through the trickle filter after vortex and UV. Seem effective.

No water is held within the sump, there is a constant flow, and just needs wool replacing periodically...

Unfortunately no picture (although I had intended on taking the camera!).

The shop itself could do with an update, but koi are in good condition! I think they mentioned about 7000sq/ft. They have main floor with approx 2 3000gal ponds and 6 1000gal ponds, with mainly std grade koi of all sizes. They also have a selection of fancy goldfish etc in tanks.

They then have a lower floor, which they have the usual pond fish, quarantine ponds and specialist Jap stock. Not sure on total gallonage - but ALOT!

Upstairs is a good selection of troptical, maybes 150/200 tanks?

    Quite alot of dry goods.

    Very helpful.

Interesting to learn that the guy who founded the business also essentially used the first UV which he had DIY built, then started selling them.

Good store, would go back again

Prices range from £3 to £2000 (with one £18000 which hes had longer thank i've spent on earth!)

Anthony stay well away from that filter wool stuff and the perlag, I replaced all of that for a customer a month ago. It was terrible all clogged up with bad bacteria and a sod to keep clean.

Ever heard of competitive exclusion ? where the system has a healthy biological culture that outbeats the bad bacteria, that system is not one of them.

Lots of different system work in one way or another, all have a basic principal of mechanical filtration then biological and some have extra to polish the water. That is a very open question as financial considerations, available space and time spent maintaining a system have to be considered.

Dealers have to have clear looking water otherwise how would they sell their fish. I know of one who does big water changes thursdays so the ponds look crystal for the weekends and customers visiting.

Keep looking around at different dealers you will see by the koi which ones are good koi managers.
