How not to keep koi !!

As a few of you know I have embarked on visiting other people and sort out their pond problems.

Well today I visited a pond that on first impressions was a reasonable pond water clear koi swimming around. After chatting with the owner for a short while I set about testing the water parameters, they checked out ok. So look at the filters first problem no air at all going in, easily solved.

The pond had a few baskets of plants around the edges on a shelf so I moved a basket to see how much debris was getting trapped by these. Well to my horror there was a full koi skeleton no tissue left on it at all. Moved another basket and a half decompossed koi. I explained the best and polite as I could, I think this is going to be a real eye opener.

it is always a shame when you come across things like that...unfortunately it will not be a rarity going on some of the advice I have seen given on other mag "forums"

I said that last night, it will be a real eye opener!

So could you help or was it a lost cause?

Just thought are you taking any pics of what you find? Be good to have images for the website and if you get any cases where you have a before and after pic along with a statement from the owner that would be excellent.

It was sad to see the dead koi as it was pure ignorance and lack of knowledge, which I do expect to come across more.

I am going back on Monday to clean the pond/filter up and get some air into it. I will have to remember my camera amongst the equipment needed. Yes I hope to have some before and after pics to add to the website, there is alot of blanket weed to clear also.

Managed to find a place that does 10kg of the Koi Masters powder for £50 delivered which is £5 cheaper than the other supplier.

Thats a good price and 10kg will last a fair while, so where did you find it ?

Guy on ebay called pond_aquatics. He only has 5kg listed but sent him an email and he confirmed the price.

how come the law doesn,t count when it comes to koi.if you treat your other pets like this you would be band from keeping them.

I know what you are saying and totally agree, but tell that to people who are just starting out with a pond and are totally clueless as to what the enviroment there fish live in requires. Sadly you can only give advise to people who will listen, at the end of the day it is their decision whether to take onboard if they think they know better then there is nothing more we can do. We see a small snippet of this on the forums daily, but who am I to police everyone who wants to keep fish.
