I have a beautiful tancho and had it for 12 months.

It seems to be developing dropsy. No sign of the usual eye popping but swelling on the body. Not quite pine cone but swelling.

My knowledge is this is a kidney problem.Should I inject or leave.

Feeding well and looking for food.

    Any suggestions

Sorry to hear about the tancho having a problem.

A couple more questions is the raised scales at one side of the body ? any sign of reddness ?

Do you have a picture of it.

The only treatment for early dropsy that I know of to help is giving it a daily salt bath. Use of antibiotics if it is dropsy will do nothing and further aggrevate the kidneys.

Oh where abouts on the body is the raised area ?

Your reply is what I thought as well.

Both sides of the body from behind the head to mid body.

    No redness and eating well.

My knowledge is there is no cure as if the salt baths work it will return.

    I will try for pics

Oh I was so hoping you would say just on one side. It does sound like a kidney problem especially in that location.

Salt bath would be my choice first and see how it goes over a couple of days, another alternative would be sabactisun.

Fingers crossed for you hope it improves.

Many years back I bought a stonking maruyama kohaku a pattern to die for. After a couple of weeks in my pond it looked good so I took it to a show and it developed dropsy overnight, it was removed from the vat and not on show I was gutted. A very knowledgeable koi judge told me it was brought on by a bacterial infection getting to the kidneys which put too much stain on the osmoregulatory system and the kindest thing was to put it to sleep. I didnt for a few days as I thought it may pull through, it didnt so I did a post mortem, the kidneys were just mush I rang Duncan Griffiths and he confirmed exactly the same as the koi judge.

Yes it is always your best koi, also does not discriminate to amount of experience and knowledge.

    Hope you prove it wrong.

    Simon

All looks ok for now.Did salt baths at 3oz/gall and now seems ok.I keep watching as the problem is quite often a kidney problem.

    I`ll keep you informed

Well done for pulling the Tancho through cheers alass you may find this koi will be the first to tell you when anything changes in the pond and may have repeated bouts of dropsy.

Keeping a close eye on all and all looks Ok.

The colder weather is fast approaching and the main pond is not heated so we will see.

After my last electric bill I think the indoor may be unheated until I can find a nice man to sort my boiler!!!!!!Sure there must be 1 on the forum?

    The Tancho still seems ok.

I am sure I read somewhere that Epsom salts was a treatment for dropsy as well?

    Anyone read that anywhere?

Yes I think it was on the YKS forum recently that someone had used Epsom Salts as a dip.

Glad it is still doing fine.
